Project: NEXT Lakeside Shopping Centre

We were contracted to undertake the roof top extension of Next, Lakeside. This involved adding a further floor and roof to an extension completed by Hillcrest some 12 years ago.

Supplementary to the steelwork, we supplied and installed metal flooring and roof decking, onsite applied intumescent painting and metal work to walkways. Prior to installation of the main extension, Hillcrest strengthened the existing columns with 100mm thick plates, fully welded to each flange.

For economics (the clients wished to keep the store open during trading hours), all works were undertaken at night. This included welding in confined spaces due to the lack of strip out.

The main works were situated 90 metres from the crane position, so a 400t mobile crane was used along with the largest fly jib in Britain, at that time.
